Harry and Meghan’s Wedding Cake at Sophie
The world’s most prominent wedding in 2018 was the wedding of Harry Windsor and American actress Meghan Markle of African American descent. The royal wedding cake was ordered at Violet London bakery from Claire Ptak, a California pastry chef.
How do you imagine a bakery looks like where British princes order wedding cakes? What area do you think it might be in? Who would its visitors be? What its windows are like? What does the interior and furniture look like? The decor on the walls? Who are its guests? Now, everything that you have imagined, crumble well, like an unnecessary piece of paper, and into the basket it goes! It is advisable to hit the basket the first try. A white spot has formed? We fill in. Violet bakery from Claire Ptak is a modest and tiny establishment in east London in the Hackney area. Hackney is a very, very, very strange district. It is known as one of the most criminal in London, and in the recent past was a poor working area. And the Violet bakery there looks like a diamond in the rough. Although … as they say in one Odessa joke “so-so.” So how are things at the bakery, where the princes order cakes?
If you look through the eyes of the average Odessa citizen – this is not a bakery, but an abandoned Soviet cafe, that someone reopened without warning or changing anything. They freaked out and decided to make cakes there, using old dishes and rusty mixers. They were even too lazy to paint the floor. Did not have time or just didn’t care. There is not a single mention in the bakery of the royal order – the terms of the contract with the most expensive “brand” in the UK. There is not only a mention, there is no cake in the menu itself. By the way, a cake for 600 people cost the Windsor 50,000 pounds! And Claire Ptak not only made money, but also became famous. She is now the most welcome guest of various events related to the wedding ceremony. And, in spite of the district, the popularity at the cafe is frantic; on the weekend, there’s no room to swing a cat, we are not even talking about a size M woman with her husband and child.
We presented our version of the lemon elderflower wedding cake at an event in the Sophie cafe restaurant, which we turned into the reception hall of the royal wedding for a lunch. Natalya Kravchenko, the pastry chef of the restaurant, taught us how to make lemon curd and lace for the cake. I told interesting and inspiring stories, ProMenu, the store with the most beautiful tableware, created the atmosphere of the holiday, and Shabo arranged the wine paring for the event.
